While the kids are away...

One of my last weekends in New Zealand was spent exploing the wonderful island of Waiheke. Despite it being a bit pricy, the island was really something special with its views of the Harukai Gulf, it's vineyards and it's pretty bays and beaches.

The hostel we stayed in was fantastic - Hekurua Lodge, just outside of Oneroa town, it was close to nearby facilities and even had a great spa pool (which was working!!! - most hostels i've been to have one, but it rarely worked!). Ma, Darren and I relaxed post Lions/All Blacks game, in the spa, whilst sipping Sambuka and enjoying the wooded surroundings. Ma in her usual crazy style was brave enough to check the temperature and depth of the other pool... cold and quite deep!!

Our trips round the vineyards was fun, and sampling wine was certainly a high point of the weekend as they we all set in gorgeous suroundings and really hit the spot!!

I definitely would recommend Waiheke as an alternative to staying in Auckland long term, but only if you can handle the tranquility - and your wine!

Vineyards worth a mention: Onetangi Road - With a micro Brewery to keep the Boys happy!

Stonyridge, Goldwater and Mudbrick.
